This robot has wheels on the ends of its legs, so basically, on flat terrain, it uses the wheels to move. In places like stairways where the robot can’t move on wheels, it can use its legs instead.

A feature of this robot is that it pedals the bike with its own feet and keeps its balance just by using the handlebars. According to its designer, this is probably a world first.

The goal of the Biomimetic Millisystems Lab is to harness features of animal manipulation, locomotion, sensing, actuation, mechanics, dynamics, and control strategies to radically improve millirobot capabilities.

Mechatron includes special wheels with rollers slanted at 45 degree angles. Driven by dedicated gearboxes, four powerful motors, and a software-controlled drive system that operates each of the wheels independently, the result is a robot that can move in any direction, at any time, and in any orientation.
